Students: ask us for help with your job search

posted in: Youth | 0

We work with youth and students across Ontario. We often hear from them that asking for help can be intimidating, frustrating and even embarrassing. If you’re nervous about asking for help with your job search, we want to make it as easy and painless as possible.

Here are three steps you can take to ask us for help:

  1. Call your nearest branch or send us a message to set up a free appointment.
  2. Sit down with an employment specialist at your nearest branch.
  3. Talk to your employment specialist to figure out your career goals and the next steps.

How we can help

Once you’ve asked us for help we can work together to help you achieve your career goals. We’ve helped hundreds of students like you with their job search goals with our programs, services and resources. All our programs and services are funded by the government and are free to students and job seekers.

Student programs

We offer multiple programs designed to help young people and students find employment. Whether you’re looking for your first job, a summer job or a part-time job, we have a program to help you. When you first get in touch with us, we’ll help you figure out what program you’ll be best suited for.

Resource centers

When you come in to the branch you’ll see some of the resources we have available. These include access to computers that have programs like Career Cruising, to help you research job opportunities and ProveIt!, to help you prepare for interviews and sharpen your skills.

One-on-one support

After we have worked together to come up with a plan, our team of employment specialists can guide you through the job search process. We can help you prepare for interviews and talk to employers on your behalf.

Workshops and Special events

We host multiple workshops every month to prepare you for your job search, like resume writing, job interview preparation and networking. We also host special events to highlight upcoming opportunities like apprenticeships and college programs. We’ll help you figure out which workshops you might benefit from and we’ll send you reminders about special events that you may want to attend.

Youth hiring events

We work with local employers who are actively hiring students by hosting events at our branches. If you attend one of these events, you’ll get the chance to meet employers and have an on-the-spot interview. After you have met with your employment specialist, we’ll also send you regular updates about upcoming hiring events that might interest you.

Financial supports

You may qualify for financial support to help you with some of the start up costs of working. This can include helping you pay for things like transportation or clothes for work. When you sit down with your employment specialist, we’ll be able to figure out if you might qualify for these supports.
