The government of Ontario has recently introduced changes to existing employment programs to help small businesses pay for hiring, retaining and training employees.

Employing Young Talent Incentive (EYTI)

The Employing Young Talent Incentive (EYTI) is a new initiative designed to help employers pay for the cost of hiring new employees, while also helping youth aged 15-29 take their first steps into the workforce. This financial incentive encourages employers to hire and retain young employees.

Employers with fewer than 100 employees who hire youth through the Employment Service (ES) program, are eligible for a $1,000 incentive upon hiring and an additional $1,000 retention incentive six months later.

Employers of any size who hire youth who face barriers to employment, through the Youth Job Connection (YJC) program are eligible for a $1,000 incentive after three months of hiring and an additional $1,000 retention incentive six months later.

Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG)

The Canada-Ontario Job Grant (COJG) is a training subsidy designed to help employers pay for the costs associated with third-party training for staff. Recent updates to the Grant make it easier and more cost-effective for you to train your staff.

As of April 1, 2018, employers with fewer than 100 employees may qualify for a reimbursement of 5/6 the cost of training—up to $10,000 per trainee.
