3 New Year’s Resolutions to help with your job search

posted in: Job Seekers | 0

According to an Ipsos poll, 1/3 of Canadians make New Year’s resolutions. But of those, nearly 3/4 break their resolution. One of the reasons that New Year’s resolutions are easy to break is that they’re often too ambitious and vague.

If you’re a job seeker, your New Year’s resolution might be to find a job. But if you want to give yourself the best chance of success, you should break that goal down into smaller, more specific and practical goals.

Here are three resolutions you can make to help you with you with your job search in the new year.

Volunteer

If you’re looking for a paying job, volunteering might not be the first thing you think about. But the benefits of volunteering can help you with your job search and other areas of your life. In addition to giving back to your community and helping others, volunteering is a great way to help your job search.

When you volunteer you also get the chance to meet new people–which can be an opportunity to expand your network of contacts.

If you’re finding that your limited work experience is a barrier to getting hired, consider a volunteering opportunity that will help you gain relevant skills to highlight on your resume.

Work on your resume

Speaking of your resume, the new year is a great time to update your resume.

Your resume is often the first thing that employers see when you apply for a job. If it’s out of date or poorly formatted, there’s a good chance that you won’t get called for an interview.

Take some time in the new year to review your resume. Ask yourself if any of the dates have changed, or if anything needs to be added. You can also sign up for one of our free Resume Building or Cover Letter workshops and get tips and one-on-one help with your resume.

Improve your skills

Improving your skills is one of the best ways to take your job search to the next level. In addition to getting the gratification of learning to do something new, you’ll also be able to build your resume.

Improving your skills can be as demanding as returning to school to get a new degree or certification. But it doesn’t have to be. Consider signing up for night classes or one of our free Customer Service Excellence workshops. VPI program participants also qualify for free access to LinkedIn Learning–a library of over 14,000 videos and courses on a range of skills-based subjects.
